General Overview
Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disease. More than 2 million Americans suffer from schizophrenia and about 1 percent of the population develops it during their lifetime. Schizophrenia effects both men and women, but it appears earlier in men during their late teens or early twenties. People with schizophrenia hear internal voices, believe people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. These symptoms will cause them to be fearful or withdrawn and their speech and behavior can be disorganized that they may seem frightening to others. Available treatments can relieve symptoms, but most people continue to suffer some symptoms. Approximately no more than one in five individuals recover completely from schizophrenia.
